A Prayer for World Peace

March 22, 2017. Sadness on this day of another violent tragedy. Prayers are going forward for London and the attack at Westminster. Together we must continue to hold to hope and place our trust in God. We know the cause of these behaviors stem from our fears, our ignorance and our unwillingness to know the One in our self is the same One in others.

I know there is but One Mind, which is the Mind of God, in which all people live and move and have their being. I know there is a Divine Pattern for humanity and within this pattern there is infinite harmony and peace, cooperation, unity and mutual helpfulness. I know that the mind of each person, being one with the Mind of God, shall discover the method, the way and the means best fitted to permit the flow of Divine Love between individuals and nations. I know there shall be a free interchange of ideas, of cultures, of spiritual concepts, of ethics, of educational systems, and scientific discoveries-for all good belongs to all alike. I know that, because the Divine Mind has created us all, we are bound together in one infinite and perfect unity. In bringing about World Peace, I know that all people and all nations will remain individual, but unified for the common purpose of promoting peace, happiness, harmony and prosperity. I know that deep within every person the Divine Pattern of perfect peace is already implanted. I now declare that in each person and in leaders of thought everywhere this Divine Pattern moves into action and form, to the end that all nations and all people shall live together in peace, harmony, and prosperity forever. So it is now.” ~Ernest Holmes.

Seeking Reality in Today’s World of Alternative Truth

“We should daily train our thought to recognize the Spirit in everything we do, say or think. There is no other way, to try any other way would be to make a complete failure. ‘Render, therefore, unto Caesar, the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.’ A constant realization of the presence of Spirit will provide a sense of Divine Companionship that no other attitude could produce. Why should we not take the highest and best? GOD IS–and we should realize this truth and make use of it. As soon as we recognize that God is, we can turn to the Law and tell It what to do.” -Ernest Holmes, The Science of Mind.

We may find that today there is no real or certain truth. Leading us to fear, anger and disharmony. Now is the most critical time for us to remember our inherent Truth. We are all of God! The daily practice of bringing this to our conscious thought, guiding our every activity and supporting the decisions and choices we make is the path to knowing the Good. Knowing that which is God’s. Like physical exercise there are many tools to develop our body’s health and vitality and there are tools and methods to develop our spiritual mind. Through the daily practice we can see the Truth, the Reality. Our ability to see the faces and the goblet in the photo is similar to knowing what is  Caesar’s and what is God’s, all in the same image. Choose wisely.

MY PURPOSE: Radiating Consciousness

“Radiating Consciousness I am forever investigating into the depths of the soul of who I am.”
This is the purpose statement I wrote for myself in 2008, shortly after my 60th birthday. This was a time for new beginnings in my life. I was reaching into an awareness that though many of my siblings, friends and colleagues were discussing the idea of retirement, I was only reaching the half way point in my earthly life.
Sometime in my childhood I had considered what the measurement of age was and how would I grow to be older than everybody I knew. It was then that I considered that to live to 120 would be my goal. I don’t remember if I considered how I would do this but the number remained with me. Whenever a question would come up in conversation or some workshop asking me to vision into the future of my life, I recalled living to 120.
The year before my 60th birthday I found myself engaged in several life changing activities. After nearly 25 years of working in the mental health field as a recreation counselor, cottage supervisor and Group Home Administrator I had earned my Ordination as a Licensed Minister in the United Church of Religious Science. My plans were to travel and basically semi-retire and live out of my motor home. I had survived two long term partners, both died of AIDS related causes. Each of these relationships had provided direction, love and healing awareness to my experience. Knowing that I could not prevent death, I discovered that I found new meaning in life by being with death. I had also thought that I would not be in another long-term relationship at this stage of my life and career. Although I never gave up the opportunity to use affirmative prayer or ask others to pray for me in regards to relationship. The past twelve years seemed to confirm that I would remain single.
Closing the non-profit organization that contained the group home operation would take some time and effort. I set out to “put my affairs in order” as people often say and used some of this time to travel. Central and South America had a strong calling including two trips on the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. These trips allowed for a deep spiritual shift to happen within my soul and my affairs. On these trips I meet up with a Shaman, neither planned, and both times I experienced a deepening beyond words.
This experience of life transformation can truly rock the boat of life and call upon your inner power to rise to the occasion or perish. It has taken three years to close out the group home organization and all the holdings. At the same time, I was hired full time to be the Senior Minister at the Palm Springs Church of Religious Science. The synchronicity is not lost on my thoughts or left out of my material for Sunday messages. When you make plans, Spirit laughs and reveals what is really meant to happen. Grateful that I am aware of this, I did not resist and allowed events to flow through my life as God would have it so. The process has graphically demonstrated that there is no denying that consciousness, once set in motion, will lavish upon every individual the abundance and the enthusiasm to which they are open to receive.
My experience and efforts spent in the group home operation had allowed for the development of leadership skills, strengths and some cash reserves. When I was offered the position of Senior Minister in 2006, they had recently lost their minister to brain cancer and their bank account cash to embezzlement. Suffice it to say, “The ship was adrift without a skipper and there was no gold in the treasure chest.” Could I accept the position, guide the members through grief, loss and healing and raise funds to help pay my salary? Spirit chuckles heartedly about this knowing quite well that I cherish a challenge. Of course, I immediately said yes and begin to work on the transformation that I first thought was about them, to realize it was going to be my life which transformed allowing others to follow or choose a different path. There has been about an equal split between those who chose to leave and those who remained, each choosing a personal path. My journey had been about revealing consciousness, realizing what it means and radiating this awareness out into the world through demonstration and life activities.
Filled with certitude that this could change for the better I set my intentions and began to imagine good flowing to us. Within six months the cash was made available, I was paid in full and we hardly looked back. Struggles remain surrounding the increase of revenues to sustain the activity, but experience now on our side and we move forward with a greater ease and knowledge that we can do this. Once again Spirit has opened a pathway to experience life in the flow of abundance, strength and feeling good. With every experience, I am guided to go deeper and reveal this thing called Life to practice the Principles of Religious Science as taught by Dr. Ernest Holmes in the Science of Mind. With each step of accomplishment one creates an atmosphere of living the good life. Through an accumulation of success there is a willingness to explore new and different avenues of growth and living a principled life. Personal growth is heightened within a community that has felt deep wounds, loss of hope or lacking a sense of well-being.
During this time of evaluating where the Center was in its survival, I meet my husband. At a time when I wasn’t seeking a relationship, to be focused on the job at hand, love arrived in my life. Spirit knew full well my desires, wants and just when I needed an intimate, loving supportive being in my life, it happened. Once again, I smiled at how this Divine Intelligence can demonstrate and manifest the perfect outcome, especially when we get the small self out of the way. Such is the writing of Ralph Waldo Emerson, (Emerson, 1945), “I am constrained every moment to acknowledge a higher origin for events than the will I call mine”, The Over-Soul.
Renewed within the confines of my intimate life I gave my marriage vow on a promise to spend the next 60 years together in joy and exploration of life. Consciousness being the heart, and love the soul of all that is. I know this to be doable. The path, once chosen, will forever unroll before us, if we are disciplined in keeping our intention and our focus on the chosen path. No one can foresee the turns and rises along the path but one can trust in the Divine Intelligence to provide our every need in a timely fashion when we remain open to receive. How simple this truth is and yet how complicated we strive to make it so. It appears that humans have set out to test the very will of God despite having thousands of years in experience to show otherwise. Therefore, we continue to seek deep within to uncover and reveal truth and to do so through trial and concerted effort. Looking toward the next 60 years I chose the path of joy, love and wisdom. Requiring of myself to relax into the journey and move with each turn or twist in the same way a willow tree bends and flows with the passing wind. One way that will maintain my intention and focus is to find time and space to be in silence.
Silence, the practice of meditation, relaxation and release that opens the portals of the soul to allow the “still, quiet voice of Spirit” to speak directly to our conscious mind. Many have reached this point of silence in a most dramatic way where they are required to surrender to the Power Within as all exterior objects have fallen away. One definite example of this is the story “Conversations with God” by Neale Donald Walsch. (Walsch, 1996). With the crying of his heart drowning out all other sounds until finally he heard the voice of God. The voice was available within him for any question that he might be seeking an answer to, and patiently waiting for him to quiet his mind and ask. How often do we see someone randomly yelling out to no one and question their sanity, perhaps they know more than we suspect? Living in the object world has led us to believe there is more power in things than within our own soul. Yet, no matter how much we change the objects, the people, the environment we remain unhappy or angry or hateful without change from within. We can talk to God, but we need to get very quiet and silent to hear the response.

The New Alternative Reality for America

The New Alternative Reality for America
The obvious lack of coherent and inspiring rhetoric from the recent inaugural address demonstrates that this President is not at the level of prophecy or vision that earmarked Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan or even John F. Kennedy’s call to action. It did however set many into action. Based on unrevealed evidence, points of controversy and huge unrealistic goals this speech fueled the flame of fear, broadened the gap of separation and drove a wedge of mistrust between everyone who is struggling to survive in a chaotic world. The 99% of us who are striving to provide a decent life for our self and our loved ones cannot isolate from the rest of the world and then benefit at the expense of others.
This is not okay because what America needs, and the world, is clarity at the level of leadership. There is a need for a call to action that bridges our differences in the stale political arguments which have consumed partisan extremes. There is a need for strengthening the will of the people over the weakening of our representatives and senators through the greed of those seeking absolute power for individual self-riches and fame without care or compassion for others.
The problems facing our country is the failure of the power in Washington, D.C. The transfer of power back to the people is not brought about by exacerbating the cost people are already burden with. The people, as indicated in the popular vote, did not favor hate, bullying or negative tweets. The average individual is generally doing all they can to make a living and provide for their loved ones. The establishment of our Constitution, Article 1, section 1 states, “All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.” My understanding of this is to allow the people to have a representative voice in how we are governed. It is incomprehensible to believe that anyone individual could be knowledgeable in every issue or concern for a nation of this magnitude. Therefore, there is a required trust and willingness to expect our elected officials to hear us and speak clearly for our concerns.
The pressure elected officials must endure to maintain sensitivity for the voice of one, hundreds, or even millions of voices is daunting. Compounded by the costs of a campaign, be informed, stand in integrity, resist temptation and find relationship with family & friends, the representative must navigate the process of and hold strong to a clear vision of the prize they represent. We demand much of them, more than most are willing to endure. The process is important. The process is how we govern. Denial, refusal and stacking the deck only serves the self-interest of absolute power. Leaders that can unite people understand that words matter, not divisive rhetoric or mocking. Uniting people requires listening to others, respecting they have a view that may be different, then working towards agreement where we can and striving to create balance through the process of governing, seeking success and not putting any one person, place or thing first, above or superior to another. United means we must be in this together, all of it, all the time.

Retired pastor rides second wave of service

Words of Faith

Is there life after retirement? What happens if you fail at retirement and want to get back into the world of work? Confronted with the 1969 Peggy Lee hit ageless question, “Is that all there is?”, I began to reconsider my choice to retire.
On August 14, 2016 I retired from the position of Spiritual Leader/Senior Minister following 10 years of service. The Center for Spiritual Living Palm Springs has served the Palm Springs community since January 1956 and in its current location since 1986. The Rev. Dr. Ernest Holmes, the founder of our movement, was headquartered in Los Angeles and had Peggy Lee as one of his followers and he chartered this Center 4 years before his death.
Dr. Holmes wrote in his Science of Mind text, 1938, “To suppose that one must retire from the world to be spiritual is one of the greatest possible mistakes. This is directly opposed to the self-evident truth that Spirit enjoys Itself only in Its own works, which is Its self-manifestation. We enter into the Spirit of Life only as we enter into the spirit of living.”
By no means does this mean we should need to work until we die. It does suggest that as we enter in the spirit of living that we ought to be engaged in a creative activity to fulfill our purpose of life. Seeking a passion within your daily activity is vital to living a healthy and joy-filled life. Whatever level of contribution one can make to the world is an action that fulfills meaning and purpose to the individual.
Our community is populated by seniors and retirees. Many have the ability to leave the career and working world and hopefully find joy and purpose on the golf course or tennis court. Others may need to supplement a minimal retirement fund to make ends meet. In all of these groups there are those seeking purpose in life, beyond the boredom of being retired.
I have found myself to be one of those who feel they still have more to offer. So, what does a retired Pastor do to express the spirit of living? Those Pastors seeking more purpose and meaning, wanting to continue to give in service become interim. A temporary role of service for a congregation seeking their next full-time spiritual leader. An opportunity to serve for a period of months, giving the years of experience to guide a congregation to its next level.
Blessed to have realized this in less than 6 months of retirement, I am again moving with Spirit in a new purpose. My first journey will be with the Center for Spiritual Living Menifee Valley. I hope to bring my experience and expertise for guiding them to a new level. There is always more and as we often quoted in the 60’s, “Keep on Keeping On!

Cooperation, Unity and Mutual Helpfulness

“I know there is but One Mind, which is the Mind of God, in which all people live and move and have their being. I know there is a Divine Pattern for humanity and within this pattern there is infinite harmony and peace, cooperation, unity and mutual helpfulness.” ~Ernest Holmes, founder of The Science of Mind.Cooperation, unity and mutual helpfulness truly defines the pathway by which humanity will experience harmony and peace. In the above photo this is seen easily for “The Twins”, for they are forever alike and the same. My husband and I cherish these characters as the ideal of our marriage. Perhaps over the years together we have merged to resemble one another in more ways than not. Honestly, I can tell you there are many differences. What keeps our marriage strong is the idea of cooperation, unity and mutual helpfulness.

The appearance of humanity in today’s world seems anything but this. The community of Palm Springs, California was shocked this weekend with the senseless shootings of three law enforcement officers responding to a distress call of domestic violence. Two of these officers paid the ultimate price of life for the safety and well-being of others. There is now way to explain or defend this act. It is beyond comprehension. The outpouring of community cooperation, unity and mutual helpfulness is a glimmer of hope for our community and the surrounding valley.
At the same time, thousands of visitors came to our valley for a larger than life musical concert. The nation is reeling through the ugliness of the most disturbing presidential campaign in my 68 years in this form of existence. The world is being torn apart by bombings and innocent killing of civilians across the globe through terror attacks and governments greedy for power, control and ego status. The planet is reacting to the environmental actions of humans, as it tries to adjust to the unprecedented human actions of careless concerns for nature.

There is no other time than now. The past is but a memory. An opportunity to do learn and to be renewed in a more intelligent and perfect unity. The future is but a hope that we do learn from our actions today. I believe our thoughts become our words and our words become our actions. There is never a case of, “just words.” Somewhere, sometime they must come to fruition. Let us choose our words with care, not from fear or hate. Speak from unity and cooperation.

Ernest Holmes writes in his Prayer for World Peace: “I know that, because the Divine Mind has created us all, we are bound together in one infinite and perfect unity. In bringing about World Peace, I know that all people and all nations will remain individual, but unified for the common purpose of promoting peace, happiness, harmony and prosperity.”

Our thoughts, our words and our actions are creating our experience. Choose wisely.

Spiritual Journey

Anything You Can Dream Of

There is one power in the Universe and it is a power of good. The way in which the individual and the collective mind of human thought uses this power will direct the physical experience we have in this life. The more we understand this Absolute Law the greater our experience of good will be made manifest. Current events in our world appear to be overwhelmingly reflecting the negative use of the power we tap into through our thoughts. Hate, anger and separation is being used at every level of our society. Far too often the use is meant to redirect the cause, blame or responsibility to an "other".

In 2007 I invited a small group from our Center to join me on a journey to Machu Picchu. A physically challenging trip of three nights and four days to climb thousands of feet into the mountains of Peru. The sustaining prayer that we held individually and collectively was that Everyone would make it to the final destination. Facing the challenges of altitude, climate, physical age and weariness, we reached our goal. Though it often did not look pretty or feel comfortable, we pressed forward. Encouraging each other, laughing at our foolishness and questioning our reason for doing this, the result was a dream made manifest.

We all had this dream. Together we moved forward in times of uncertainty, trusting our guides, both physical and spiritual, we believed we could do this, and do it we did. The final step of this long journey is well planned out by the guides, unknown to us as the first time. Yet, there we were at the break of dawn rising over the final step into this ancient site. Below us was a dream come true. We had arrived and laying before us was a most spectacular view with many hidden mysteries. Life can present Itself in many ways, but what you dare to dream of can be your greatest joy.

Choose in each moment to dream of a greater joy, a sense of love, more abundance. Though it may not be immediate, trust and know that it is available if you are willing to dream of it. Begin each day with a dream of something greater. Dream of peace on Earth. Dream of abundance and good for all. Dream of a world that works for the good of all.
